A padded scooter board can provide plenty of fun and enjoyment while at the same time helping them to develop their balancing skills as well as strength.

They come in various shapes and sizes, the example in the image shows a circular shaped board with padding and two easy to grip handles and the child can choose the direction they want to go while using it.

Also with the board only being a few inches from the ground it makes it a lot safer for them, if they do lose their balance there is much less danger of them hurting themselves.

It should be noted that the boards are only for seated use or lying on their tummy but should not be used while the child is standing, some children may choose to be in a kneeling position and sitting on their legs which is fine too.

The wheels are not locked in any position and are usually of the castor type so that the board can move in any direction under the control of the child.

The boards vary in price depending on the size and shape.

For a child, not all mobility aids have to be purely for support or just getting from point A to B, some can be fun too and allow the child to experience as much fun as able-bodied children.

A trike can be ideal for children who are able to use their legs but at the same time need the added stability of 3 wheels, also mobility trikes come with trunk and pelvic supports if the child needs them, so that they can ride safely and it lessens worry for parents who may fear their child not being supported enough.

The child can actually feel very secure and is still free to have lots of fun and enjoyment from riding their trike.

Most of the models of mobility trikes available can be folded down for easier transportation, so use of the trike is not limited to only when the child is near to home.

Prices start at around £450 but depending on the needs, some can cost slightly less while other models will cost considerably more.

Some trikes can cost over £1000, for example the type that are suitably for children with Cerebral Palsy, they provide good seating, support around the body and a support for the childs head too as well as a steering function handle for a parent or carer, this is fitted at the back of the trike.

This type also comes with weighted pedals and adjustments can easily be made to the seat and supports to suit the user and make the experience as comfortable for the child as possible.

An ideal combination of safety and fun.

Just as you can purchase warmers, capes and protection against the weather for adult wheelchair users, so too can you for child wheelchair users too.

Some capes and covers dont have any sleeves to them so they of course are suited to when a child will be pushed in the wheelchair and not operating it themselves but there are also the type that do have sleeves for a child that will be using the wheelchair themselves or simply prefers to have their arms free rather than underneath the cover.

Whether a child needs the use of a warmer or just waterproof protection there are solutions to suit not just the type of weather but the childs own choice of how they want to be covered and these products dont cost that much, with some starting at around £15 for the type of covers that cover from the waist to the feet.

Most fit the child quite snug too so that the cover is not hanging down below their feet or at the sides of the wheelchair.

As well as walkers being available for adults, you can also find them for children at a size and weight that is easily manageable for a child to use.

Usually there are hand grips on the sides of the walker frame and depending on the type there may be an open front section with the cross rails behind the child, or on some the walker is mostly in front of the child, with the handles being about level with the back wheels and the child walks behind the walker.

They are usually height adjustable and can also be folded down so that they will fit quite easily into cars and other vehicles.

Most walkers for children are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.

Prices can range from around £350 up to around £800, sometimes more, depending on features that the walker provides.

A walker provides the child with the chance to move around of their own will and promotes a feeling of being able to do it by themselves rather than having an adult so close by to assist.

For children requiring additional support when standing and walking but who also need to build confidence and have the freedom to move at their own will, a mobility stroller can be ideal as the child is able to stand and rest safely in between moving around a room while in the stroller.

Many of the strollers available have the option of using the supplied harness or using it without the harness and the child can be supported purely by their grip on the stroller.

Child mobility strollers allow for an upright position, and are lightweight so that the child can move around easily. The castors allow for the stroller to be moved in all directions and they can usually be locked too when needed.

The beauty of a stroller is that it can provide as much or as little support for the child as is necessary, it puts the child in control of where they want to go.

Along the top part of the stroller frame it will usually be padded too so that the child will be comfortable enough while resting their arms and while holding on.

There are different sizes available that will be suitable for toddlers to children around 8 – 9 years old.
