Problems When Using Throttle On Mobility Scooter?

When it comes to using your mobility scooter, without use of the throttle itself, it pretty much is useless, although the throttle is dependant on other areas of the mobility scooter, like the motor and power from the battery, it’s the throttle that gives you the control and the freedom to get about.

Because the throttle is a moving part and because it is dependant on other parts of the mobility scooter in order to work, it can, from time to time have problems, even though some of the problems may not be directly from the throttle.

Some problems may result in a lack of smooth motion as you control the throttle, and instead of the usual motion that you are used to you may get dead spots or the motion is jerky and unpredictable which can actually make it dangerous to use.

For example you could be crossing a road or travelling on the road and if your mobility scooter is not behaving as normal this could leave you in a dangerous situation if it wont move forwards or backwards when expected.

A fault may exist within the throttle control that can cause problems and lead to abnormal motion as mentioned above with unpredictable acceleration or complete dead spots.

But also you should check the battery, while a complete disconnection of the battery would obviously result in no power at all, it’s possible that a loose, faulty or even dirty connection could interfere with the rest of the parts that rely on power passing through properly for normal operation.

Also the cable leading to the motor needs to be checked to see that nothing is loose or damaged that could lead to the types of problems mentioned.

After checking each of these it’s also worth checking if the motor itself may be the cause of the problem, this doesn’t mean that the whole motor may be at fault but maybe that there are worn brushes within the motor.

While checking each part, it can be a good idea to check some of the easier to test parts first, then you can rule out each one until you find the problem.

The reason that any part of your mobility scooter is not working correctly can sometimes have an obvious answer but this is not always the case and investigating what is happening with or parts can then lead to why another part is not working.

The reliance that one part can have on another means that sometimes it takes a little bit longer to find out the cause of the problem but it also familiarizes you with each area of the mobility scooter if you happen to be doing the work yourself.

Mobility Scooter Motor Overheating?

If you are having problems with your mobility scooter and suspect that the problem may be to do with the motor and that the motor is overheating then there are a few things that may cause this.

One can be that the brake is not releasing properly and this starts to put unnecessary strain on the motor because instead of it just working at moving the mobility scooter it’s now also trying to work against the resistance caused by the brake not being released properly.

This issue is not of you doing anything wrong but something that causes the brake to stick and because the brake is not disengaging the motor is put under more strain that it should be.

Another problem may be that the motor has gone bad and that nothing external of the motor is causing the overheating but just that the motor itself is well worn and needs a complete replacement.

If you are able to, do check that the issue is not down to the brake sticking, because if this is not at first ruled out as being the potential reason for the overheating, then you might pay to have a new motor fitted or even fit it yourself, only to find the same problem shortly afterwards and the new motor overheating just like the previous one.

Another way to find out if the issue could be with the brake is to see if the brake is getting voltage properly, if not then the problem may be within the controller circuit board and that needs to be looked at and possibly replaced.

Mobility Scooter Troubleshooting

With a mobility scooter there are various problems that can be encountered from time to time, the types of problems can vary with the make and model of mobility scooter that you have and some makes and models might have common and well known problems.

Sometimes a user can experience a problem where the mobility scooter keeps starting and stopping, what may happen is that it may travel a few meters and then stops and then allows you to move a little further and then stops again.

In other cases you might be ready to use your mobility scooter to find that it simply wont move, and as comes naturally to most, you will probably find yourself checking the battery at first to make sure that it has a charge and that the battery and it’s connections are fine.

Beyond checking the battery, some of the other areas to check is all of the wiring to make sure that none is disconnected or that no wiring is damaged.

Depending on whether you are getting some movement from the mobility scooter or no movement at all, you will also want to check fuses to see if this could be the issue.

Also it can be worth checking to see if anything is overheating, like the motor.

Fortunately with a mobility scooter, theres not quite so many parts, unlike other vehicles, so it can sometimes be easier to narrow down what may be causing a problem.

In the cases where the problem that you are experiencing is very common to a particular model of a mobility scooter, it can make it a bit easier to find out how to fix the problem as there can be plenty of information available about it, but sometimes the problem can be a little different or not common with the make and model that you have.

It is a good idea though to start with checking the connections, wiring, any signs of overheating and fuses to rule these out first, then beyond that if you cant find any other obvious faults and theres nothing mentioned regarding the problem in any manual available that you have, then the next step can be to have a professional look at it.

If you dont mind, and are able to, it’s always worth a quick look yourself, you could save yourself time, and money too if the problem is something minor and the extra knowledge that you gain can be handy for any time in the future that your mobility scooter has problems operating.
